This masked lapwing has been faithfully guarding her nest of eggs for over a week. Every morning and throughout the day someone will run outside to check on her. Her mate remains near and delivers food to her throughout the days.
Naturally, I had to photograph her and in doing so I frightened her (sorry mama). She left her nest, spread her wings and started scolding me loudly. I mean, LOUDLY. Apparantly, these birds do typically nest on the ground, mark their territory and defend their nests by all means.
We are very curious to watch the evolution of this family- masked lapwings will mate for years and their young will often remain with the mother and father for years to come. It is not uncommon to see these types of birds in family groups.
We are all very excited to meet the little birds!
